How to Prepare for an Appraisal Inspection

The scope of a personal property appraisal generally includes an inspection of the objects to be appraised in order to gather information on the characteristics that have an impact on each object’s value. In addition, an inspection is also useful for the appraiser to determine the methods and techniques to be applied to the specific assignment. All appraisals must include a certification statement about whether a personal inspection did or did not take place.

At Acanthus we typically travel to where the objects and collections to be appraised are located in order to conduct an inspection of the items. We handle, examine and identify the property, count and measure groups of items, look for identifying marks or signatures that may affect their value, inspect the condition and structural integrity of objects to see if alterations have been made or if repairs are required, take photographs, and in some cases (e.g., sterling silver), weigh the objects.

After the inspection is over, we take all the information gathered and conduct our market research and analyses. Finally, we write and prepare our appraisal report. Please note that we typically do not deliver our report until payment in full for the assignment has been received.
